The
New
Capital Country Music Assoc. Committee
A Special Meeting held at the Australian Country Music Foundation
building in Tamworth on May 9th 2011 saw the induction of a brand new
committee for the Capital Country Music Association (CCMA).
Outgoing President Kevin Harris welcomed the 30 plus crowd of interested
people to the meeting and then handed over to the nights Chairman Peter
Izod.
Peter outlined the purpose of this special meeting, which was
primarily to inform the public that the outgoing
committee were not standing for any positions this year
and there was not enough interested members to take over
the helm. He was hopeful that a new committee could be
formed and they will be able to get
people involved who want to be 'hands on' in developing the CCMA and the
Country Music Industry in Tamworth.
2011 officially marks the 40th year of the CCMA
(having it's roots in the Modern Country
Music Association from 1964) and
has seen the rise of many of our great Country performers over the years
including Lee Kernaghan, Shaza Leigh, Wayne Horsburgh, Felicity
Urquhart, Keith Urban, Corinna Cordwell, Peter Horan,
Denise Morrison, Colin Buchanan and Alyce Simmonds.
It was heartening to see such a cross section of professional
Business/Industry people and professional Artists/Musicians along with
the wonderful Lovers/Supporters of Country Music and many past
Presidents, Secretaries and Life Members who turned out to show
their support of this iconic establishment and who want to see it
continue into the future.
The new Committee consists of Steve Newton -
President; Steve
Charles - Srn Vice President; Jon Wolfe - Jrn Vice President;
Sally-Anne Whitten - Secretary; Peter Hawkins - Treasurer/Public Officer; Bob Kirchner -
Assistant Secretary;
Jodie Crosby - Publicity Officer; Peg Gilchrist, Dot Gilchrist,
Shaza Leigh, Michelle Simmonds and Diana Jones - Committee Members.
The new committees immediate plans are to organise a
Fund Raising Concert during the "Hats Off" weekend for
Saturday night with some of Tamworth's and Australia's
biggest names in Country Music headlining, so keep your eye
out for that! Also, the revival of the popular workshops and
concerts which will encourage and help anyone who would like
to get up and have a go.
Of course, the National Talent Quest will still be held in
January during the Tamworth Country Music Festival, as it
has been run for the last 40 years, albeit with a few
changes
(still in the pipeline).
We here at CelebritE News would like to wish the Capital
Country Music Association all the very best
of luck, may it
grow stronger than ever into the future.

country album.
Titled
Tennessee: The Nashville
Sessions, the album was
officially released on Tuesday May 10.
The US-based
star has released two previous solo albums but the new
record will be his first dabble into country.
"This is not a
departure for me," he says. "I simply stepped outside the
Air Supply box to dip a toe into other waters, an ocean of
music that I've admired from afar."
The two-disc
CD will include 20 songs, of which Russell says: "I am more
than pleased with this project. This compilation will touch
hearts the same way Air Supply music does"

There are some great international artists
coming to our beautiful country over the next few months so I thought I
would mention some of them here. We are so lucky that these people bring their
shows to our shores considering the expense in travelling,
accommodation, production etc these days!
I would like to say right up that there could
be many more but these are the only ones I know about!
Out of England

To draw comparisons to Sir Elton John is impossible;
artist, altruistic philanthropist, Grammy, Oscar, Tony and
BRIT winner, his many accolades have made him an inimitable
force in a career spanning five decades, with his
versatility and effortless talent showing no sign of slowing
down.
Acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest living pop icons,
Elton’s audience has seen him traverse a career that began
in the 1960s when he was a shy singer/songwriter and saw him
grow into one of the most successful musicians of all time.
His crossovers from classic balladry, soul and disco to
country, gospel and rock have often confounded but never
disappointed his legion of worldwide fans. As one of the
greatest showmen of all time, his spectacular stage shows
continue to leave the competition standing still in his
wake.
As a humanitarian, Elton is a force for good whose public
and private generosity support a staggering number of causes
around the world, including establishing the Elton John AIDS
Foundation in 1992, and in 1997 raising over $40 million for
charity through sales of ‘Candle In The Wind 1997,’
the single released following the death of his friend Diana,
Princess of Wales.
Having sold over 250 million albums worldwide – in 1975, one
in every fifty albums sold was an Elton John record – and
boasting a career that has kept him and his songwriting
partner, Bernie Taupin, at the top of the charts for nearly
40 years, his lifework has amalgamated into more than that
of just a recording artist. Through a partnership with
lyricist Tim Rice came the music for both the feature film
and Broadway stage production of ‘The Lion King.’
Elton also wrote the music for the stage production of
‘Billy Elliot: The Musical’ and more recently for the
box office smash, ‘Gnomeo & Juliet.’
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s
greatest pop musicians in spectacular form when the
ROCKET MAN returns to Australia this November/December.

Apart
from being an accomplished singer songwriter / banjoist /
guitarist / flautist and tin whistler,
Finbar Furey
is hailed as Irelands Prince of Pipers and was for many
years the lead singer and front man of The Furey Brothers.
He is a master piper with a unique style. He has won every
known Uillean pipe title, including 3 All Ireland
Championships.
A man of great musical
passion and a pioneer for the cause of Irish music, Finbar
has carved a special place for himself in the world of music
and in the hearts of millions of people. After four solo
albums Finbar proudly returns to Australia for the release
of his new album “Once when I was”.
Irelands
greatest family comedian of our generation proudly presents
38 years in the Comedy business and most of this time at the
very top of his profession. Brendan Graces' latest show
features some brand new material and some 'Old Favourites'
from his vast repertoire. His sense of timing and ability to
read an audience is without equal. A brilliant character
actor, his 'Bottler' character is legendary and is now
featured at every performance. Apart from his obvious 'star
quality' in all aspects of his performance Brendan's drawing
power is enormous and the 'House Full' sign is the norm
rather than the exception at his concerts.
In more recent times Brendan has managed to attract a
younger audience mainly because the content of his show is
very 'Family' and also because of his hilarious appearance
in Father Ted when he played the part of a drinking.
Smoking, troublemaker extraordinaire Father Fintan Stack. As
always and especially nowadays it is advisable to secure
your Brendan Grace ticket when he appears in your area.

To Billie With Love From Dee Dee:

A Celebration of the Life and Music of Billie Holiday
28th May 2011
Presented By
Sydney Opera House
in the Concert Hall
2011 Grammy-award-winning jazz vocalist, Dee Dee Bridgewater
celebrates the life and music of the iconic Billie Holiday
in her only Australian performance.
'Dee Dee Bridgewater has the jazz world standing on its
ears. With the passing of many grand dames of jazz such as
Ella and Sarah, Dee Dee Bridgewater is a legend in her own
time.'
JazzReview.com
'Everything she does is energized by a bright, sassy humor.'
JazzTimes
‘She impersonates Holiday's voice just once… but this is
Bridgewater's show: she's a fine actor, but she's playing
herself, and the audience adores her.’
The Guardian, UK
One of the last great Jazz vocalists, Grammy & Tony-Award
winning artist, Dee Dee Bridgewater is probably the
most electrifying stage presence in vocal jazz today.
Over the course of a four decade career, few others have
ever commanded such depth of artistry in every medium.
Putting her own spin on standards as well as re-envisioning
jazz classics, her flawless technique and musicality has
ensured a legion of fans worldwide.
Returning to one of her prime inspirations, the iconic
Billie Holiday, Dee Dee makes her Sydney Opera House debut
to give her only Australian performance of recent 2011
Grammy – Award winning album ‘Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959):
To Billie With Love From Dee Dee’.
Equal parts sexy, spunky and sublime, audiences will be
transfixed by Dee Dee’s exceptionally spirited dynamo and
prowess as she showcases Holiday’s classic repertoire in her
own inimitable style, including Lady Sings the Blues,
Lover Man, God Bless the Child, Don’t Explain and more.
Accompanied by the superlative arrangements of her band that
feature Edsel Gomez (piano); Kenny Davis
(bass); Craig Handy (Sax/Reeds); and Jaz Sawyer
(Drums), don’t miss your only opportunity to experience this
amazing vocal talent in an unforgettably touching,
hard-swinging and soulful live performance dedicated to one
of the most influential vocalists in Jazz history

KAREN LYNNE
'Heart Songs & Laugh Lines' |
|
 |
|
I absolutely
love this latest album from Karen, her ninth to date. It's a
class act! But seriously, she's a 'Hands of Fame' recipient,
a multi-award winner and after three international tours under
her belt, you would expect nothing less!
From the first track, Unbreakable Heart
(Benmont Tench), the album
captures my attention...no mean feat these days. Karen's
crystal clear vocals shine through on every track.
There's a beautiful duet with Randy Kohrs - Every Time
You Leave
(Charlie & Ira Louvin)
penned by the famous Louvin Brothers, Jenny Dreamed Of
Trains written by Vince Gill & Guy C Clark - a fabulous
song about trusting in the Universe or, if you like, having faith in God.
Actually, I can't help but have a little giggle at Karen's
expense...in her cover notes she writes; "No Bluegrass or
Country Folk this time around..." but having a song
written by Vince Gill almost guarantees at least a
hint of Bluegrass/ Country Folk! :)
I Cross My Heart
(Steve Dorff & Eric Kaz),
previously a big hit for George Strait, Karen presents it with style
here. I just loved Why They Call it Falling
(Roxie Dean & Don Schiltz),
You Beat All I've Ever Seen
(Kostas/Melba Montgomery/Kathy Louvin),
the ever popular Crazy
(Willie Nelson),
and Corner Of The Heart
(Hugh Prestwood)
I guess you can
blame
it on my romantic heart.
There are two tracks co-written by Karen and her mate
Allan Caswell - The Road That Brought Me Here
(Allan Caswell & Karen Lynne)
and There For You
(Allan Caswell & Karen Lynne)
both great country songs.
A lovely little lullaby written by Mary Chapin Carpenter
called Dreamland
(Mary Chapin Carpenter)
that Karen recorded for her "precious little boy".
The three remaining tracks -The Rose & The Briar
(Bruce Woodley & John Farrar),
Something That We Do
(Clint Black & Skip Ewing)
and Friends
(Joni Harms & Buck Moore),
are just as inspiring as the rest, but I'm running out of
space, suffice to say, they are beautifully written songs
which are brilliantly sung by one of our most underrated
country singers in Australia.

MELODY FEDER
'Dirt Roads & Diamonds' |
|
 |
|
Earlier this
month I received an EP from a young 'up and coming' singer
from SA called Melody Feder. I had read a review about her
earlier in the Country Music Capital News (April Issue), and
so was very interested to have a listen to her 6 track CD.
First thing I noticed before putting the disc on was that
Melody had written or co-written ever track, very game
indeed. But, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of
the storylines.
So on goes the disc, I gave it a spin as they say:) The
first track RSVP
(M.Feder),
is a modern, what I would consider, country rock song which
could easily be an updated answer to the song 'Return To
Sender'.
The second track, Where Would Your Heart Be
(M.Feder)
is a lovely love song and really shows the sweet tones of
Melody's voice.
Shutup & Kiss Me
(M.Feder/J.Molton),
is another modern country song with a
driving beat and puts me in mind a bit of 'I Feel Lucky'.
Cold Hearted Cowboy
(M.Feder/J.Molton),
is a great straight country love song with a nice beat for
dancing to. Actually those that know me, know I don't dance,
but I can imagine other people dancing to it:)
Something I'd Never Do
(M.Feder),
is a ballad about a love that's gone wrong. With lovely
vocals from Melody and, I would like to mention, the
harmonies from Steven Sherrah and Tracey Stewart are
beautiful. It's great to hear their kin harmonies again.
The last track, aptly named Up & Gone
(M.Feder)
is another modern country song about a girl who has had
enough.
There are some really great musicians playing on this EP
too. Acoustic & Lead Guitar, Bass and Ganjo - Anthony
Stewart. Drums - BJ Barker. Fiddle - Hamish
Davidson. Steel - Kevin Bergen. Harmonica -
Trent Williamson.
It seems fair to say that you need to keep your eye open for
this young lady. She has a nice husky edge to her voice
which helps her stand out in the pack and her song writing
abilities have a lot of potential.
I'm not the only one who can see Melody's talent
either. She has had a hugely successful year having
won multiple awards including;
- SA & Vic Champion of Champions
- The CCMA Songwriters Award (Tamworth)
- The Aristocrat Entertainer of the Year (Tamworth)
Dirt Roads & Diamonds was produced with excellence by
Anthony Stewart and recorded at Red Brick Studios out of
Adelaide, SA.

BRIAN LETTON
'Timeless' |
|
 |
|
In the last
couple of weeks I have had the privilege to be working with
my old mate Brian Letton on his upcoming new release on the
LBS recording label, which brought his latest release
Timeless to the forefront of my mind, especially
since I played on that one too. So, this is a perfect time
to turn back time and review the Timeless album.
Timeless is another gem produced by Lindsay Butler
OAM on the LBS label out of Tamworth, Australia's Country
Music Capital.
As the introduction says on his cover notes "Timeless is
a good way of describing the talent of Brian Letton", he
continues to produce International standard vocals on World
class songs and his appeal is...Timeless!
I suppose some would say I am biased when it comes to Brian
because he is a personal friend of mine, but don't be fooled
by that. When I hear talent I will let it be known - trust
me, and this gentleman is extremely talented!
He has many well deserved awards and accolades under his
belt too, but strangely no Golden Guitar yet???!!! LOL!
Maybe one day we will all be very pleasantly surprised hey
Brian:)
Anyway, moving right along, this album consists of 12 true
country tracks sung in Brian's signature country crooner
voice that his hoardes of fans have come to expect!
Cover versions of songs like You're The Best Friend
(Isla Grant),
The Comfort Of Her Wings
(Worley/Rudd/Vippleman)
and Hills Of Home
(Joy McKean),
A Brand New Bed of Roses
(Z.Alexander/M.Woods)
and Absent Friends
(Cardy/Tingery)
all
very familiar songs to me.
There's songs to stir my Aussie blood like She'll Be
Right Mate
(Chris Callaghan),
and Soldier On
(Chris Callaghan)
great
patriotic songs.
Also there's wonderfully sentimental songs like The Ring
Your Mother Wore
(Nicholls/Allen/Worton),
Loving You Your Way
(Chris Callaghan),
Holding Forever In My Hands
(Manfred Vijars/Shaza Leigh)
and Spinning And Twirling And Falling In Love
(George Sic).
There's even a track that Brian does a duet with his young
son Matthew Daddy What If
(Shel Silverstein),
keeping it in the family.
The Timeless album features the brilliant
musicianship of Lindsay Butler OAM & Brett Dallas on
Guitars, Shaza Leigh on Bass Guitar, Greg Williams and,
another son of Brian's, Trevor Letton on Drums, Lawrie
Minson on Harp, Noel Manser on Accordion, Hugh Curtis on
Fiddle/Mandolin, Mark Moulynox on Pedal Steel/Dobro, Russell
Dick & me (Peggy) on Piano/Keyboards/Strings, Barbara
Bidencope on Tin Whistle, and on Harmonies - Greg Williams &
Lynette Guest.
This is a great album as by now you can tell, a must have in
your collection.

The Bad...
Once again though, Brian
Letton and others as well deserving, left the CMAA
Australian Country Music Awards empty handed!! |
|
The Good...
However, it would be remise
not to mention Glen Hannah picking up the CMAA Musician
of the Year 2011 award. Congratulations mate!
Oh and while we are on the subject, congratulations to the
happy couple Glen and his lovely wife Felicity (Urquhart) on
the arrival of their first child Tia Joy Hannah. Felicity
says "She is a cute little possum" and I say "how could she
be otherwise with beautiful parents like you two??" |
